Hey, fellow anime enjoyers and lore gremlins. It is 2026, and I am still not over Bungou Stray Dogs. I started as a casual player of the anime game—okay, not a game, but you get the vibe—and now I have strong opinions about a fictional detective agency in Yokohama. Atsushi Nakajima, the tiger boy with trauma and a heart of gold, joins the Armed Detective Agency, meets a bunch of superpowered weirdos, and learns to protect the peace of Yokohama City. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. The ADA is a legal-but-not-government agency that takes cases too dangerous or too weird for the police, and its origin story is basically a buddy comedy with murder.

Let me explain why the Armed Detective Agency matters so much. Despite having a limited roster, it can go toe to toe with the Port Mafia, a dangerous gang of outlaws that operates in the night. The ADA does not buy or sell weapons. It does not work under the government. It just solves supernatural crimes, protects civilians, and occasionally lets Dazai do something that should require a permit. Most cases are too strange for the metropolitan police, so agency members need to defend themselves with wits, abilities, or both. Honestly, in 2026, that sounds like the only workplace I would trust with a haunted vending machine.

But here is the thing: a government would not willingly allow humans with supernatural abilities to legally investigate cases and solve them. That could cause civil unrest. So how did Yukichi Fukuzawa establish the agency? Unlike what many may think, the Detective Agency did not spring up overnight. It began over a decade before the current events, when Fukuzawa was only a professional bodyguard and Edogawa Ranpo was an arrogant young lad.

As a bodyguard, Fukuzawa has a company CEO for a client. However, she is killed in her office. Determined to find the killer, Fukuzawa heads to her office, where he finds the secretary arranging clues that could expose the perpetrator. Meanwhile, the suspected killer is tied up next door. As Fukuzawa and the secretary talk, a young Edogawa Ranpo promptly walks in, steps all over the clues like they are crunchy autumn leaves, and wonders why Fukuzawa refuses to detain the real killer—the secretary. Everyone is astounded. Ranpo quickly gives his deduction, and the secretary is revealed to be the killer. Cue the dramatic music and my immediate respect for a child who treats crime scenes like a personal playground.

Believing Ranpo to be special, Fukuzawa treats him to red bean porridge. Ranpo rants about his bewilderment with adults as they see the truth and refuse to voice it out. Hearing this, Fukuzawa figures Ranpo is special and has him join him for a job. The next job is to apprehend a killer who sent a death threat to a theater. However, on getting to the theater, Ranpo quickly deduces that it is not a threat but an announcement, and the theater does not truly trust Fukuzawa. They are only using him as a front. Ranpo is once again bewildered by adults playing dumb, and Fukuzawa tells him that he has a gift to see everything in one glance, and the world is simply filled with foolish children who do not see things as he does.

Seeing things in a different light, Ranpo then sees himself as the world's greatest detective who must protect the stupid children of the world who do not see the truth. Coming to a realization, Ranpo solves all the loose ends of the case, and Fukuzawa disarms the perpetrators. Later, the case is closed, and Ranpo becomes attached to Fukuzawa. They solve various odd jobs together before eventually becoming renowned for their skills. Later, Fukuzawa seeks out Soseki Natsume to help him acquire a skilled business permit. With Ranpo at the front, Fukuzawa sets out to use Ranpo's deductive abilities alongside his own combat experience to establish the Armed Detective Agency.

After the establishment of the Detective Agency, many long years pass. Individuals such as Akiko Yosano, Doppo Kunikida, and Osamu Dazai join the agency. With new individuals and more capable hands, the Detective Agency continually grows stronger and more capable of defeating its adversaries as well as protecting the peace of Yokohama City. All thanks to the fateful meeting between Edogawa Ranpo and Yukichi Fukuzawa. I love that the ADA is not just a workplace. It is a found family of walking disasters. Ranpo is the genius who needs snacks. Dazai is the bandaged chaos agent. Kunikida is the only one with a schedule. Yosano can heal you in ways that make you wish you had stayed injured. Fukuzawa is the exhausted dad with a sword. Atsushi is the new kid trying to pay rent in a city where buildings explode weekly.

In 2026, I still think this origin is why the series hits so hard. It explains why the ADA fights the Port Mafia and government red tape. They are not perfect. They are legally recognized, barely. They are a bunch of overpowered weirdos who chose to protect a city that does not always understand them. If you are like me, you rewatch the Untold Origins arc and suddenly every Ranpo snack joke feels like character lore. Fukuzawa did not just create an agency. He created a home for a boy who saw too much and a team of people who see the world differently.

Would I apply to the Armed Detective Agency? Absolutely. My ability? Overanalyzing anime and making instant noodles. Ranpo would probably solve the case before I finish boiling water. But I can cheer from the sidelines as the ADA keeps Yokohama from collapsing. Again. Bungou Stray Dogs remains available to stream legally, and as of 2026, the fandom is still waiting, theorizing, and crying. Same as always.
